“Le Grec” is a Famous wreck in South France close to Hyeres Named Sagona when it was built in 1912 in Dundee for the Newfoundland Produce company, the ship passed from company to company: Reid Newfoundland Co in 1914,.
in 1923 the British government became the owner, and Culliford’s Associated Lines in 1941. A Greek company, Zaratti S.S. Co. Ltd, took it over next.
It was nicknamed “The Greek” (Le Grec) because at the time of the shipwreck, the crew and ship’s documents were of that nationality. On December 3, 1945, carrying a cargo of wine, the Sagona—a freighter going under the Panamanian flag—entered the passage between the islands of Port-Cros and Porquerolles. Measuring 54 meters long by 8.5 meters wide, it registered 808 gross tons. It struck a mine on its port side and sank immediately, leaving two dead and one missing.
