Coron Bay is a world-class diving destination famous for its collection of WWII Japanese shipwrecks, accessible to various skill levels. Popular wreck dives include the large oil tanker Okikawa Maru and the seaplane tender Akitsushima. Other popular dive sites include Barracuda Lake, which features a unique halocline and deeper thermocline, and the shallow Lusong Gunboat, which is suitable for snorkelers.
I went to Coron Bay in September 2025 to scan the wrecks. Actually that time of the year is difficult for diving, because of Taifun season (Rain, storm and poor visibility).
I scanned the following wrecks:
- Akitsushima: A Japanese seaplane tender and the only true warship among the wrecks. It lies on its side with the highest point at about (22) meters, featuring a large crane and gun placements.
- Irako: A Japanese refrigeration ship known for its deep, dark dive experience.
- Kogyo Maru: A large cargo and supply vessel that is popular for wreck penetration.
- Okikawa Maru: A large tanker that serves as an artificial reef, attracting vibrant marine life.
- Olympia Maru: A cargo ship with easy penetration points, ideal for divers wanting to practice wreck diving skills.
- Lusong Gunboat (Uruppu Maru): Another gunboat that is accessible to divers.
- Morazan (Ekkai Maru): A cargo ship that was originally built in England and later used by the Japanese navy.
- US Landing Craft
