MV Hamada

The M.V HAMADA was a small cargo ship of 654 GRT built in 1993 in the UK. HAMADA hit a submerged object and sank on the 29th June 1993 when on route from Jeddah for Suez with plastic. Owned at the time by Phemios Shipping Co. Pvt. Ltd., Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Previously called:
MV Avocet 1965-1976
MV Afroditi H. 1976-1982
MV Samarah 1982-1985
MV HAMADA 1985-1993

There are different versions of the Hamada’s loss. One report indicates that she caught fire and sank in deep water. The P & O file states that the ship struck an “submerged object” in heavy weather at position 24.42N/35.25E off of Ras Banas while en route on 28 June 1993 from Jeddah to Suez and subsequently foundered.

What is known for sure is that the ship is now located and accessible in 14-meters of water accessible from the shore after about 15 minutes of swimming from the shore of Abu Ghosun reef, in the water of the national park.

The dive

I dived the wreck for the first time in July 2018 with my doughter and my wife. And I scanned the wreck on June 29th 2025 during the Red Sea Wreck Academy tour on the M/Y Charlotte Red Sea.
